Welcome to Proud Salopians - an inclusive supporter's group for an inclusive football club.
Proud Salopians aims to be a friendly, welcoming and inclusive Shrewsbury Town supporter's group for all LGBTQ+ communities and Allies. We want to help make our own Montgomery Waters Meadow, as well as Football in general, inclusive spaces where everyone feels safe to be their authentic selves.
So why do supporter's groups exist and what is their purpose?
Historically they are there to act as a voice from the stands to the board room and to a certain extent this hasn’t changed. But over recent years supporter groups have evolved. They are now over 50 LGBT+ (and Allies) supporter's groups across the UK up and down the football pyramid. They all serve similar purposes.
-
Building and promoting a club commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
-
Bringing LGBT+ fans & Allies together on match days, creating a safe environment and attracting new fans.
-
Being a voice and establishing dialogue with the club to focus on match day experience, stewarding, incident reporting, etc.
-
Promoting visibility of the club’s LGBT+ fan base and commitment to LGBT+ equality
-
This list of course is not exhaustive, but ultimately the core purpose is the same: an equal, diverse and inclusive football club.
Our main goal is to bring the LGBT+ communities and Allies of Shrewsbury Town Football Club together to celebrate the diversity of the club, highlight inclusivity and increase LGBT+ visibility. Shrewsbury Town is a progressive football club, with an inclusive 'Football For All' policy, and we want to be a beacon for that.
We welcome with open arms all who wish to be involved - no matter how little or often, whether you've been going to watch Salop for decades or you've not yet attended your first Town game, we'd love to hear from you. We’re collectively a group of both LGBTQ+ fans and their Allies too, so please come and say hello - our founder, Andy is a season ticket holder in the South (Salop Leisure) Stand, at the front of Block 10's Safe Standing (Row N, Area 15) and is happy to chat all things LGBTQ+ and Salop at any home game this season.
